Case Study Information

During the practicum session, students will be given the opportunity to try out the techniques learned in the lectures. In the practicum sessions student will work in groups to expand on a case study that will be provided at the beginning of the day. For those students that wish to submit a case study for consideration to be used during the day, please email a 1-page write-up to Jeff Carver no later than July 13, 2004. The write-up should provide the parameters and context within which the study will occur. The write-up should cover:

1) Context of the study

    - Experimental hypotheses and specific questions that the study should address

    - Motivation (e.g. improved software quality, shorter development cycle, etc...)

    - Development environment (e.g. COTS-driven, distributed, waterfall, etc...)

2) Object of study (e.g. a process, tool, etc...)

3) Available data sources for the study:

    - University courses (graduate/undergraduate, topic of course, number of students, etc...)

    - Professional development organizations (mission, size, improvement goals, current baselines available for comparison, etc...)

    - Other groups of people (e.g. candidates for surveys or interviews)

    - Existing artifacts (e.g. historical documents, documented processes, etc...)

    - Events that could be monitored or observed (e.g. meetings, etc...)

4) Constraints

    - Resources (e.g. facilities, equipment, budget, training, documentation, etc...)

    - Other constraints (e.g. intellectual property, calendar time, confidentiality, etc...)
